VSOP

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The abbreviation VSOP is a predicate name for cognac , brandy or Armagnac , which is intended to signal the particularly old age and quality of these spirits. The acronym VSOP comes from English and is resolved with very superior old pale (German: “excellent, old and pale”) or very special old pale (German: “very particularly old and pale”).

Usual designations (sometimes also without "." And / or with spaces) are:

  • VO ( very old ) for brandies with barrel storage for at least two  years,
  • VSOP ( very superior old pale , German "excellent, old and pale") for those with a barrel storage of at least four  years as well
  • VVSOP ( very, very superior old pale , dt. "Very excellent, old and pale") with a barrel storage of at least five  years.

There are also other age predicate designations that are not all officially controlled, e.g. B. (with colloquial or meaning according to BNIC ):

  • VS ( very special ) or *** (3 stars) - Cognac, the youngest distillate of which is at least two years old.
  • XO ( extra old ), Napoléon or Hors d'âge - Cognac, the youngest distillate of which is at least six years old.

The VSOP system is also used to classify Martinique rum or calvados .
