Veve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A veve is a graphic symbol that represents a voodoo spirit ( loa ) in a ritual .

Each loa has its own veve that can be clearly assigned to it. However, due to regional differences in voodoo and different currents, there are also different veve for the same loa.

Making a veve

The veve is usually made on the ground with powdery materials, for example crushed eggshells, cornmeal or simply with chalk, but sometimes it is simply scratched into the sand or ground with a stick.

Correct representation of a veve is a skill that only initiates of voodoo possess, as it is believed that the power of a veve increases with the level of correct detail in the drawing.
