Via falsa [lat. wrong path, zu: via (path) and falsus (wrong)] in medicine denotes the unintentional ( iatrogenic ) departure from the correct or planned course of an inserted instrument or foreign material, usually outside of anatomically defined structures, such as B. blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, tooth roots (e.g. for root canal treatment ) or urethra (e.g. for catheterization or cystoscopy ).

This can have no consequences or, depending on the location, lead to serious complications such as perforation, bleeding or infections.
