Viale dei Colli (translated as hill road) is the name of a 6 km long panoramic road in Florence . It extends from the Porta Romana to the Ponte San Niccolò and was planned and realized by Giuseppe Poggi during the short period when Florence was the capital of Italy (1865–1871). The architect described them meticulously in Chapter 7 of his report on the urban expansion of Florence. He deliberately designed “painterly” effects, including the ramp to the church of San Miniato al Monte and the Cimitero delle Porte Sante cemetery . The Piazzale Michelangelo is designed as the highlight of the scenic road. Poggi's successful planning influenced, among other things, the Vienna Höhenstrasse project .
