The Piazzale Michelangelo is a lookout point in the Tuscan metropolis of Florence , which is best known for the view of the city. It was created in 1865 according to the plans of the architect and town planner Giuseppe Poggi . At that time Florence was the capital of Italy for a short time and in this context there were ambitious construction and "renovation" projects based on the model of the reconstruction of Paris by Georges-Eugène Haussmann , which continued to work until the turn of 1900. The quays along the Arno were created, today's Piazza della Repubblica and, as one of the first measures, an eight-kilometer long panoramic road on the hill of San Miniato , called Viale dei Colli , as the center and highlight of which Poggi designed the Piazzale Michelangelo. Poggi also designed the pavilion in the classical style in the background of the square, which was initially intended to serve as the Michelangelo Museum, but after a few years was converted into a panorama restaurant.

Bronze copies of some of Michelangelo's works , such as David and the four allegories of the Medici Chapels of San Lorenzo, decorate the square.

From the Piazzale you can see the center of Florence, from Forte Belvedere and the Santa Croce church over the Ponte Vecchio , the cathedral , the Palazzo Vecchio , the Bargello to the hills on the northern edge of the city, such as those of Fiesole .

The spacious square is a central point for bus tourism.
