The Bargello or more correctly Palazzo del Bargello is a city palace in Florence , which was built between 1255 and 1261 and expanded to a four-wing complex between 1280 and 1346. The name comes from its penultimate determination as the seat of the police captain , the Bargello , the "Büttels".

history

The building complex, dominated by a 54-meter-high tower, was the first seat of the municipal authorities and, compared to the Palazzo Vecchio , which was built a little later, is still unadorned on the outside, in stark contrast to the richly decorated halls.

The bargello subsequently served as:

  • Seat of the Capitano del Popolo
  • Seat of the Priori delle Arti as part of the Signoria (since 1282)
  • Seat of the court (1502–1574)
  • Headquarters of the police chief

From around 1700 until the end of the 18th century, the Bargello court served as a place of execution. In 1859 the Bargello was converted into a museum, the Museo nazionale del Bargello , so that the city could house the Renaissance sculptures that no longer had a place in the Uffizi .

Bargello National Museum

In the Bargello, partly in its courtyard, there is one of the most important collections of sculptures in the world with works by Michelangelo , Donatello , Benvenuto Cellini , Giovanni Bologna (Giambologna), Baccio Bandinelli , Vincenzo Danti and Tino di Camaino . In addition, the museum has an extremely extensive coin collection, a collection of weapons and armor, as well as miniatures.
