Victoria Memorial (India)

The Victoria Memorial is a monument erected in Kolkata in honor of Queen Victoria of Great Britain .

In January 1901, after the death of Queen Victoria, George Curzon , Governor General and Viceroy of India , proposed that a monument be erected in honor of the Queen The Prince of Wales , who later became King George V, laid the foundation stone on January 4, 1906 .

The Victoria Memorial was designed by the English architect William Emerson . It was completed in 1921. The gardens were designed by Lord Redesdale and Sir David Prain . It currently houses a museum and serves as a tourist attraction in Calcutta. The museum houses over 30,000 exhibits. The style of the building has been described as Indo-Saracen as it incorporates elements of Indian-Islamic architecture. The building contains allusions to the Taj Mahal , India's most famous structure. Like the Taj, the Victoria Memorial is built in white Makrana marble.
