Vietnam Airlines flight 815 was an international scheduled flight of Vietnam Airlines from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh , in which a Tupolev Tu-134B-3 crashed on September 3, 1997 while approaching Phnom Penh Airport. 65 people lost their lives in the accident. It is the worst aviation accident in Cambodia.
Flight history
The Tupolev Tu-134 took off at around 1:00 p.m. local time (8:00 a.m. CET) in Ho Chi Minh City for its 45-minute flight to Phnom Penh. In Phnom Penh it was raining heavily during the approach. The aircraft was already flying too low at the beginning of the approach. The captain ignored the information from the copilot and the flight engineer. Instead, he gave instructions to look for the runway. Due to the bad weather conditions, however, it was not visible. The aircraft then struck against a palm tree, after which the captain tried to abort the landing and durchzustarten . This attempt failed, however, when the aircraft collided again a short time later with some palm trees and the left wing was damaged. The plane crashed into rice fields about 300 meters from the runway. 65 of the 66 people on board died in the accident.
examination
The investigation named pilot errors on the part of the captain as the cause of the crash. He ignored the instructions regarding the altitude and continued the approach despite the poor visual conditions.
