Vicariate coins

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vicariate coins (also called vicariate thalers) are coins that were minted by some electors ( Palatinate , Saxony and Bavaria ) after the death of an emperor and until the election of the next emperor in memory of this event. The Palatine and Bavarian vicariate coins are mostly ducats , thalers and half thalers , but in Saxony smaller values down to the groschen were also minted. After the death of Emperor Leopold II in 1792, the last vicariate coins were minted by Saxony and Bavaria.
