Villa Muñoz
Villa Muñoz , actually Villa José María Muñoz , is a district ( barrio ) of the Uruguayan capital Montevideo and part of the barrio Villa Muñoz - Retiro .
location
Today (as of 2014) Villa Muñoz is integrated into the Barrio Villa Muñoz - Retiro and is located near the city center in the central southern part of the Montevideo department .
history
The origin of the Villa José María Muñoz goes back to the Compañia Nacional de Credito y Obras Públicas founded and financed by Emilio Reus in 1889. This in turn founded the Barrios Reus al Norte and Reus al Sur . The former barrio , consisting of ten Manzanas , was renamed to Villa José María Muñoz shortly after the death of the politician José María Muñoz . However, the abbreviated form of the name is common. By the beginning of the 20th century, the barrio was already equipped with electric street lighting and wide, paved streets in good condition. The architecture of the time is described as being compact and elegant, including two-story commercial buildings. There was also an electric tram.
