The Villa Schlikker at Steinstrasse 29 in Schüttorf is a listed building from 1903. It was built as a wedding present for a wealthy young couple.

history

The textile manufacturer Herman ten Wolde gave the villa to his daughter Ida and his son-in-law Ludwig Schlikker for their wedding. With this marriage, ties were established between two families who had acquired their wealth in the textile industry: Schlikker & Söhne, an OHG , had been based in Schüttorf since 1868. At that time the owner and authorized signatory were Gerhardus (Gerhard) Schlikker and his sons Hermann and Edo Floris . Before this OHG came into being, Gerhard Schlikker had run a manufactured goods store in Schüttorf and traded linen and half-linen, which he initially had at home. Later he started the factory production of these fabrics. The fact that he had specialized in linen and not switched to cotton benefited him and the entire Schlikker family at the time of the American Civil War . At the time of the villa construction, the Schlikker & Sons spinning mill in Schüttorf was run as a GmbH and there were numerous other companies in Schüttorf and the surrounding area in which the Schlikker family was involved.

Ludwig Schlikker, the young groom, was not active in the textile industry. He was born the son of Wilhelm Schlikkers or Georg Wilhelm Schlikkers and thus the grandson of Gerhard Schlikkers on July 11, 1872 in Schüttorf, attended grammar school in Lingen and studied medicine. His dissertation from 1899, which contains a biographical synopsis, is entitled A Fatal Case of Gastric Ulcer.

Ludwig Schlikker's father-in-law Herman ten Wolde ran the H. ten Wolde & Co. spinning mill in Schüttorf until 1902. It then continued to run under its old name for the time being, but ten Wolde was now active in the banking and real estate business. He was apparently also very wealthy: in 1903 he not only gave away the villa, but also bought Altena Castle and had the ruins of the south and east wings blown up and the north and west wings renovated and converted for residential purposes.

After the villa was initially inhabited by the couple Ida and Ludwig Schlikker, it was later taken over by the veterinarian Dr. Wilhelm Schlikker used. The owner Elisabeth Schlikker received the monument award of the Landesbausparkasse in 1996 for maintaining the villa close to the original. The jury found the Villa Schlikker to be “one of the most beautiful buildings in the county of Bentheim” and of great importance for urban development.

description

The interior of Villa Schlikker in particular is characterized by Art Nouveau . The two-story building is decorated with stucco ornaments and equipped with stained glass windows. Paneling, doors and fittings as well as the furniture, which has been preserved almost entirely in the original, also belong to Art Nouveau.

From the beginning, the building was equipped with central heating that ran on coke . In addition, an emergency power supply was already thought of during the construction and therefore a storage battery was placed in the basement, which should be used in the event that the power station should fail.
