Vilniaus žinios ( German  Wilnaer Nachrichten ) was a newspaper that was published in Vilnius between 1904 and 1909 .

history

The newspaper was the first legal daily to appear in Lithuanian after the Lithuanian press ban was lifted on May 7, 1904. The first edition appeared on December 23, 1904, the last after 1175 numbers on March 17, 1909. Vilniaus žinios was founded by Petras Vileišis , who produced it in his printing house and was the official publisher. In fact, the newspaper was initially published by Jonas Jablonskis and Povilas Višinskis , later by Jonas Kriaučiūnas , Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas , Jonas Vileišis and others.

Initially, there was great interest in the new newspaper; in 1905 the circulation reached 6,000 copies. The newspaper's staff were co-organizers of the Vilnius Grand Assembly in late 1905. Interest ebbed soon after when the newspaper sought an impartial position and published news from across the country. Vilniaus žinios did not succeed in developing a clearly defined journalistic profile; the people involved changed frequently. The Catholic rural population was initially alienated by an anti-religious attitude. Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas promised to move away from this position at the end of 1906 when he became the new editor. This did not save the newspaper, however, because it lost the readership of the liberal, urban intelligentsia . The circulation fell to 2,000 copies and in early 1907 the newspaper went bankrupt.

After a hiatus of a few months, Petras Vileišis revitalized the newspaper and sold it in October 1907 to a company owned by Jonas Vileišis and others. Vilniaus žinios was now based on the positions of the Lithuanian social democrats . This alienated them even more from the Catholic priests and the rural population, and the circulation continued to decline. In March 1909 the newspaper ran into financial difficulties again and was discontinued.
