Earl of Selborne , in the County of Southampton , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on December 30, 1882 for the barrister and former Liberal Party MP , Roundell Palmer, 1st Baron Selborne , along with the subordinate title Viscount Wolmer , of Blackmoor in the County of Southampton. As early as October 23, 1872, the subordinate title Baron Selborne , of Selborne in the County of Southampton, had been awarded to him.

Both his son, the 2nd Earl, and his grandson, the 3rd Earl, were both well-known politicians and representatives of liberal unionism . The latter became a member of the House of Lords before his father's death in October 1940 , as the subordinate title of his father Baron Selborne was prematurely transferred to him through Writ of Acceleration .

The current 4th Earl, John Palmer is one of 99 elected Hereditary Peers who remained in the House of Lords after the House of Lords Act 1999 went into effect . There he belongs to the faction of the Conservative Party .

The Earls family seat is Temple Manor near Selborne in Hampshire .
