One possible interpretation of the multi-layered text is that the song is about the discrepancy between realism and idealism . Accordingly, the eponymous Johanna embodied the idealist, while Luise embodied the realistic extreme. He, the singer, feels torn, the idealistic Johanna on the one hand, the realistic Luise on the other. He tries to weigh things up, but in the end he thinks he realizes that realism is fleeting and that only idealism lasts.

The British poet Sir Andrew Motion crowned the work in 1999 with his opinion that it was the best song lyrics that has ever been written.

In 2005 the piece was ranked 404 in the list of the 500 greatest songs of all time by the music magazine Rolling Stone .
