Vokiečių gatvė

German Street / Vokiečių gatvė ( Jidd. Deitsche Street ) is one of the oldest streets in Vilnius Old Town , Lithuania . It connects Trakų gatvė , Dominikonų gatvė , Didžioji , Rūdninkų at the Vilnius City Hall . There is the Center for Contemporary Art, an institute of the Vilniaus universitetas , Evangelical Lutheran Church Vilnius .

history

Since the times of Gediminas there have been merchants and craftsmen from the Hanseatic cities. It was mentioned in a document in 1576. In the 15th-16th In the 18th century it was one of the most beautiful and important streets in the city with two and three-story stone houses. In the Soviet era it was called Muziejaus gatvė . Until the Second World War, the street was the center of trade. The Vilnius Ghetto consisted of two parts, the Large and the Small Ghetto, which were separated from each other by the Vokiečių gatvė .

On October 3, 2016, Lithuanian-German bilingual street signs were also set up.
