Volley Schönenwerd (formerly TV Schönenwerd or also: TVS / Turnverein Schönenwerd) is a Swiss gymnastics club from Schönenwerd in the canton of Solothurn . The gymnastics club was founded in 1878 and at that time still consisted of different teams. The volleyball department , which is the only one that still exists today, was founded in 1980. This resulted in the first men's team and in 1983 the first women's team. In 2014 this led to a name change to Volley Schönenwerd.
Currently (season 2018/19) Volley Schönenwerd consists of 307 members (active and passive members).
History of the volleyball department
In the course of time, the TV Schönenwerd developed away from popular sport towards specialization, which in 1980 led to the establishment of the volleyball team. Through this reorientation, the connection to the young people was found again and the downfall of TV Schönenwerd was prevented. The first men's team came into being in the same year, the first women's team followed in 1983. The cooperation between the school and TV Schönenwerd formed the basis for a momentum in the men's and women's areas. New teams were created and youth work was promoted. In the 1986/87 season, TV Schönenwerd then competed for the first time with two teams, a men's and a women's team, at national level. The highlight was the rise of the men's team to the National League A in 1996. As a result, the club became a semi-professional operation, which in 1999 almost led to the dissolution of the club due to the excessive workload. The club was saved by the fact that the new club management in 2000 set their goals lower. From 2005 onwards, the men's Fanion team was able to establish itself in the National League B. In the 2009/10 season, TV Schönenwerd Volleyball celebrated its 30th anniversary. In keeping with this anniversary, the first men's team made it to the National League A in that season. In the second year in the top division, TV Schönenwerd achieved the greatest success in club history in the 2011/12 season with 4th place in the men's team to celebrate. In line with this, the first women's team made it to the National League B in the same season. In the 2012/13 season, the first men's team won the bronze medal in the National League A, making TV Schönenwerd the first time in the club's history to participate in one European competition, the 2014 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup .
To this day, Volley Schönenwerd is also a training club for young talents. Since 2009 there has been a special training for junior women from the region. Some players from the TVS youngsters made it to national teams, to the European Cup or to the top of the world beach volleyball team. In 2013 and 2014, the Juniors of Volley Schönenwerd became Swiss U23 champions twice in a row. Awards such as MVP, Best Setter, Best Hitter or Best Libero went to the Niederämter in both tournaments. In the last 6 years the junior team has already won the U23 Swiss championship title five times and has also defended its title this year.
Teams
The club's draft horses are the national league A team for men and the national league B team for women.
In the 2018/19 season, 4 teams (3 men / 1 women) will compete for Volley Schönenwerd at the national level, 4 teams (1 men / 3 women) will play in the regional leagues and 8 teams will compete in the juniors. There is also mini volleyball for the youngest, where they can gain their first volleyball experience.
Venues
The men's top division games have so far taken place in Däniken in the Erlimatthalle, in the Giroud-Olma Hall in Olten and in the Mittelgösgen district school in Obergösgen . The games of the other national and regional championships were played in Schönenwerd in the field and village gym.
Due to the unsatisfactory hall situation, which made both the club's cohesion and the training conditions difficult, a project was launched in 2013 to build a separate triple hall. Five years after the start of the project, the Betoncoupe Arena in Schönenwerd was opened on January 20, 2018. In future, the hall will not only be home to Volley Schönenwerd, but also the Swissvolley performance center and the venue for international matches for the Swiss national teams.
