As executive assistant used to describe people who volunteer in prison work and supervise prisoners socially.

Formal requirements

In principle, all prison officers must have been exempt from punishment for at least three years; No preliminary investigation may have been initiated against them at the time of their appointment or later . The minimum age is 18 to 21 years, depending on the federal state.

tasks

Prison assistants are used to provide support during the prison system, in preparation for release from prison and in the time immediately after release. In the prison itself, for example, they organize group courses for further training in technical, musical or artistic fields.

Another field of activity for prison workers is the individual care of prisoners. In penal systems in Germany, prisoners usually have a very limited right to visit of around one hour a month ( Section 24 (1) of the Penal Service Act) . As a result, direct contact with people outside the prison is generally rare and the risk of social isolation increases. Prison assistants, on the other hand, can visit the prisoner as often and for as long as both wish without prior notice. In some prisons, the prison helper is consulted in addition to the regular prison conferences, at which the further course of imprisonment and the prison plan are determined. The prison helper can be heard here and with the permission of the prisoner he can be granted access to the files ; however, there is no entitlement to this.
