The VRA is responsible for the generation of electrical energy. In 1970, the Volta Lake Transport Company [VLTC] was established whose vessels for freight and passenger transport on the Volta Lake are used.

In addition, the VRA is committed to environmental protection projects, the expansion of the health service and education in the area of the Volta reservoir.

In the 1960s, the VRA was responsible for the resettlement of 80,000 people whose villages were flooded by the Volta reservoir.

Since 2005, responsibility for power transmission has been transferred to an independent institution, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo). Previously this was with the VRA. The aim was to open the market to independent electricity producers.
