From Gimborn Arboretum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Von Gimborn Arboretum is a botanical garden in the Dutch village of Doorn (municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug ). It is also known as the Gimborn National Tree Museum .

history

The history of the garden began as the private property of the German industrialist Max von Gimborn, who had become wealthy with the production of ink. He bought 47 hectares of land in 1924, and landscape architect Gerard Bleeker began dividing up the garden. He was inspired by English park gardens. After Max von Gimborn's death, the arboretum was sold to the University of Utrecht in 1965 and belonged to the local botanical garden (approx. 18 km away). In 1981 the park became partially open to the public. In 2009 the university transferred the garden to a private foundation for a symbolic purchase price of 1 euro. The park has a world famous collection of trees and shrubs. The aim of the foundation is to preserve this collection, especially the rare varieties.
