vpopmail is an abstraction layer for the mail server qmail which makes it possible to remove the user accounts from the Unix environment and also simplifies the virtualization of domains.

The problem with many service providers is the domains to be managed in relation to the available IP addresses . In the classic principle, a mail domain is assigned to an IP address. However, this is currently no longer the state of the art. However, many mail servers are not easily able to handle multiple domains properly.

A frequently used mail server is qmail. qmail is considered to be extremely secure, even if it has not been further developed directly for a long time. The current version is 1.03.

The problems with qmail are not only the domains that can still be solved, but also the fact that every mail account becomes a real user on a Linux / Unix server, i.e. receives an entry in / etc / passwd. This makes the system vulnerable to security and makes administration more difficult.

Thanks to vpopmail, the accounts can be managed in a database, usually MySQL or LDAP . This also allows the use of other administration tools, such as the QMailAdmin .
