The Waco CRG is a biplane racing aircraft produced by the US manufacturer Waco Aircraft Company .

history

The Waco CRG was specially developed for use as a racing aircraft. The two built copies with the approvals NC600Y (plant number 3349) and NC660Y (plant number 3350) were completed in 1930 on the day before the start of the "Ford Reliability Tour" (also known as the "6th Annual National Air Tour"). The two CRG finished the 1,600 mile race with an average speed of 237 km / h in second and third place.

construction

The fuselage of the CRG, like the tail surfaces, is a welded tubular steel construction with wooden molded parts. The wooden wings had an M-18 profile and originally metal ailerons, but these were replaced by wooden ones on the restored machine. The covered fixed chassis has a track width of 2.14 m and is equipped with oil struts. Although the machine has three seats, the front seat is permanently covered.

The original Wright J6-7 engine with 240 hp was replaced by a Continental R-760 -E2 with 235 hp during the restoration . Interestingly, without the townend ring that is normally installed, the machine reaches a top speed 10 mph higher. The fuel supply is 320 l (80 US-gal.) With a consumption of 49 l / h (13 US-gal / h).

Whereabouts

NC600Y was sold to the Skywriting Corporation of America and for a time carried the colors of Coca-Cola . After a landing accident, she was parked in Long Island . She was sold in 1963 and did not fly again until 1975 after a 12 year restoration.
