Elections in the Central African Republic

This overview contains all elections in the Central African Republic since independence in 1960.

January 11, 1964 : Presidential election . The only candidate, David Dacko from the MESAN unity party , was elected with 99.97% of all votes. The term of office was to be seven years and ended in a coup on January 1, 1966.

March 15, 1964 : General election . The unity party MESAN received 98.96% of all votes.

February 1, 1981 : Constitutional referendum , passed with 98.55%.

March 15, 1981 : Presidential election , first election with multiple candidates and parties. David Dacko of the UDC , who came to power in a coup in 1979 , was elected with 51.10%. However, after a few months on September 1, 1981, he was deposed by a coup by General André Kolingba .

November 21, 1986 : Constitutional referendum , passed with 92.22%. As a result, the newly created RDC ("Central African Democratic Collection") became the unity party of the state and the president was elected for another six years.

July 31, 1987 : general election . A vote against the unity party RDC was not possible, so it received 100%.

October 25, 1992 : presidential and parliamentary elections . The results have been declared invalid by a court.

1993 (August 22 / September 19): First parliamentary election with several parties. By far the strongest party, but without an absolute majority, was the MLPC . In the simultaneous presidential election , the MLCP candidate Ange-Félix Patassé was elected.

December 28, 1994 : Constitutional referendum , passed with 82.7%.

1998 (November 22nd / December 13th): parliamentary elections . The MLPC received almost half of the seats, but almost all other parties joined together to form the UFAP and thus achieved a majority.

October 25, 1999 : presidential election . President Patassé was confirmed with 51.33% in the first ballot. On March 15, 2003, he was overthrown in a coup, and François Bozizé became the new president .

December 5, 2004 : Constitutional referendum , passed with 91.37%.

2005 (March 13 / May 8): presidential and parliamentary elections . President Bozizé was elected.

2011: presidential and parliamentary elections . The president was re-elected. Almost all seats in parliament went to the bipartisan coalition National Convergence "Kwa Na Kwa" . However, there was a coup on March 24, 2013, and the president fled abroad.

2015 (December 13-14 ): Constitutional referendum , passed with 93.00%. A Senate and a Supreme Court will be provided for. The President's term of office is limited to two five-year terms.

2015/16: Presidential election, the independent candidate Faustin-Archange Touadéra was elected . At the same time parliamentary elections , almost half of the seats went to independent candidates, all parties remained below 10%.
