Right to vote in the country of origin

The right to vote in the country of grant some states fully to the own, expatriate citizens, other states set a time limit, others restrict the right to vote on domestic-based citizen.

Six EU countries restrict the right of their citizens living abroad to vote in their national parliamentary elections: Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Cyprus stipulate this in laws, Denmark and Malta in the constitution.

Germany

Germans abroad can only participate in the Bundestag election if, after reaching the age of fourteen, they have lived in an apartment for at least three consecutive months in the Federal Republic of Germany or have otherwise resided and this stay does not date back more than 25 years or, for other reasons, are personally and directly familiar with the political situation in the Federal Republic of Germany and are affected by them (§ 12 BWahlG). To do this, they can be entered in the electoral roll of the municipality, municipality or city in which they were last registered with their main place of residence (see also: Germans Abroad # Wahlrecht ).

Austria

Austrians abroad are entitled to vote in presidential and parliamentary elections in Austria as well as in referendums. In order to vote, you have to be entered in the voter register of an Austrian municipality and apply for a voting card there for postal voting . The entry in the electoral register must be renewed every ten years.

Switzerland

The Swiss Abroad can participate in the National Council elections from abroad and vote on federal proposals, provided they have moved abroad, are at least 18 years old and are registered with a Swiss representation.

United Kingdom

Britons abroad - unless they work in the British Army or as Crown Servant for the British Government - are excluded from general elections after 15 years abroad . This group of people was also excluded from the Brexit referendum .

United States

US citizens residing outside the United States are eligible to vote in the state in which they were last registered. In numerous states of the USA, citizens who have never lived in the USA can also be entered on an electoral list there in which a legal guardian was last entered.
