Electoral votes (waltz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Votes is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op.250). The work was performed for the first time on January 28, 1861 in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The work was dedicated to the law students of the university and premiered at their Faschingsball ( Juristenball ). The name goes back to an imperial ordinance of November 25, 1860, according to which regional elections were allowed for the first time in the Danube Monarchy. That was an important step from absolute to constitutional monarchy. Compared to today, however, the right to vote was still severely restricted and subject to conditions. At that time women were not allowed to vote either. Even so, allowing elections in itself was a step forward. The law students were delighted with both the waltz and the message of suffrage associated with it.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 11 minutes and 21 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
