Waldo E. Smith Award
The Waldo E. Smith Award (until 2012 Waldo E. Smith Medal ) is an award given by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) for achievements in the field of geophysics .
The medal is awarded every two years and is intended to honor individuals who have strengthened and advanced geophysics as a science with exceptional achievements and commitment in various areas such as research, teaching, public relations, legislation, management and many more.
The award was introduced in 1982 and named after Waldo E. Smith (1900-1994), who was the first to be honored with the medal in 1984. Smith became AGU's first managing director in 1944 and was named and honored for his tireless efforts to make AGU a dynamic, growing company. All his life he devoted himself - nationally and internationally - to the promotion of geophysics with special attention to the AGU.
