The Wallace Monument is a 67 m high square tower, which was built in 1869 near Stirling , Scotland , in memory of William Wallace .

Location and history

The neo-Gothic tower is located 1.5 km northeast of Stirling on Abbey Craig Mountain on the road to Dunbley . Wallace is said to have watched the English army from this hill before commanding the Scottish troops on the attack. The construction time was eight years. Locals claim the tower was built as an attraction for English tourists .

The Wallace Monument is home to a year-round museum with information on the Battle of Stirling Bridge and famous Scottish figures. Right next to the entrance door you will find a life-size replica of the freedom fighter who says to a figure of the English king : "You have my body, but never my loyalty and my respect."

On the first floor is the William Wallace Talking Head , a 3D animation that tells the visitor the story of William Wallace and the Battle of Stirling Bridge. William Wallace's sword is also on display there. After the movie Braveheart , the Wallace Monument tripled the number of visitors.

Floor 2 houses the “Hall of Heroes”: an exhibition on other Scottish personalities, especially those of the 20th century. The story of the monument itself is told one floor higher. It also shows where in the world there are still monuments to William Wallace.

An observation deck called The Crown is located at the top of the tower and offers views of Stirling and Stirling Castle .
