Sanctuary of the Madonna della Bocciola
The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Bocciola is located in Vacciago, a district of the municipality of Ameno , in the province of Novara in Italy . The sanctuary is a reminder of what the Catholic Church sees as a miracle : the apparition of Mary to a shepherd girl named Giulia Manfredi in 1543.

According to religious legend, through the mediation of the seer, the Madonna promised tokens of favor from heaven if the inhabitants of this village on the east bank of Lake Orta would devote themselves to prayer on Saturday afternoon and abstain from work in preparation for Sunday. The pilgrimage site gradually grew and was given its current form in the classicistic style by 1875.
The painting (1822–1824) was done by Agostino Comerio (1774–1834).
