Codecademy is an interactive internet platform that offers free programming lessons in four languages for many programming languages (including Python , jQuery , JavaScript , AngularJS and Ruby , as well as HTML and CSS ). Since January 2014, the website has had more than 24 million user views, of which well over 100 million exercise units have been completed. On September 18, 2015, Codecademy was ranked 1608th among the most frequently visited websites in the world in the Alexa Traffic Rank .

The project received positive reviews from the New York Times and TechCrunch, among others .

Each user creates his own profile. In order to create learning incentives, the user receives feedback, badges for completed learning units and an entry in a high score. This can be viewed by other users. Each tutorial also contains CSS and HTML glossaries so that every user can design and publish additional learning units.

Codecademy also offers a forum where beginners and advanced users can exchange ideas and help. For some lessons there are sandboxes - programming environments in which users can test their code. There are four main areas: Web (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), Ruby, Python, and Miscellaneous.

As part of the Computer Science Education Week in December 2013, Codecademy launched their first iOS app under the name Hour of Code to teach programming basics. The same content is used as on the Codecademy website. The app helps to learn programming using gamification .

The company received a final grant from Index Ventures .
