The State Forest extends in several parcels along the Housatonic River . There are two nature reserves in the area: Gold's Pines and Canaan Mountain ⊙ . In its southernmost parcel, the forest also encloses Housatonic Meadows State Park . There the Housatonic Valley Rail Trail runs on the opposite bank and it is the only state forest in Connecticut through which the Appalachian Trail runs.
