Haystack Mountain is a mountain in Haystack Mountain State Park , a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the parish of Norfolk . The mountain is 523 m (1716 ft) high ( above sea level ) and offers spectacular views of Litchfield County .
The 10 m (34 ft) high Haystack Mountain Tower was built in 1929 and is on the National Register of Historic Places . It was built from the local gneiss . There is a good view of the parishes of Norfolk and Canaan from there .
Raccoons, bears, deer, coyotes, possums , skunks and foxes live in the park . The dominant tree species is the broad-leaved bay rose ( Kalmia latifolia ), a heather plant known for its beautiful flowers and the state flower of Connecticut, as well as pines and maples.
The park is framed by North Brook to the north and west and Wood Creek to the east, two small tributaries of the Blackberry River , which marks the south flank of the park.
