The Walpurgishalle on the Hexentanzplatz near Thale in the Harz Mountains is a building in a modeled on "old Germanic" style.

history

The idea for the Walpurgishalle came from the painter Hermann Hendrich . He decided to build the hall on the Hexentanzplatz after his original idea of building a hall on the Brocken could not be realized. In 1901, the hall was built in the style of an old Germanic log house , designed by the Berlin architect Bernhard Sehring , and inaugurated that same year.

The original five large paintings inside the hall were created by Hermann Hendrich . These show five scenes from the Walpurgis Night by Goethe's Faust : will-o'-the-wisps dance, mammons cave, witches dance, the bride of the wind and the appearance of Gretchen ( Gretchen tragedy ). Today the hall is a museum. Two more paintings by Hermann Hendrich were later exhibited in the entrance area. In 1928, the Walpurgishalle was supplemented by a further extension. Hendrich's paintings were also shown in it.

The museum can be visited from April to October.
