Walter Secondo

Walter Secondo is a German eye surgeon and specialist in refractive eye surgery .

Life

Secondo received his doctorate in 1991 on the subject of the initial thoracic survey as a prognostic aid for assessing the course of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in AIDS patients at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . He has been working as an ophthalmologist since 1992. He completed his specialist training at the university hospitals in Glasgow and Bonn. In 1997 he was appointed senior physician at the University Eye Clinic in Marburg. From 2006 to 2008 he held the position of Deputy Clinic Director at the University Eye Clinic in Mainz . Since December 1, 2008, he has been head of the ophthalmology department at the University Hospital Gießen and Marburg and is also University Professor of Ophthalmology at the Philipps University of Marburg .

Scientific work

Secondo deals with different aspects of eye surgery in over 40 specialist articles. He mainly deals with diseases of the anterior segment of the eye in relation to corneal, cataract and refractive surgery.

Awards

For his work in the field of refractive eye surgery, he and his colleague Marcus Blum received first prize in 2008 from the American Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in the Instruments and Devices category. Later that year, they were honored with the second video prize from the German Ophthalmological Society. In 2010, both finally received the Leonhard Klein Prize for their work on Femtosecond Lenticle Extraction (FLEX) - a novel method for the surgical treatment of myopia .
