Waltz (profession)

Waltz is the job title of a worker in the metal manufacturing industry.

A waltz is the operator of a rolling train in which slabs are formed into sheets or billets into bar material or profiles such as rails or girders. The roll stands have to be rebuilt, adjusted and readjusted during the rolling due to wear and tear.

Historical

Formerly, the job of the rolling mill worker was to turn the billet with heavy tongs while rolling on steel bar mills in order to reinsert it backwards on a trio stand into the pass for the next pass. Typical work clothing for the waltz was a leather apron, sturdy leather boots with particularly thick soles and headgear that offered protection against the high levels of heat. The different occupational groups of the steel processing industry were u. a. also presented in a vivid way by the Berlin sculptor Gerhard Janensch in the form of sculptures.
