Wall thickness (hollow body)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The difference between the inner and outer dimensions of the walls of a pipe , housing , pressure vessel or other hollow body is called wall thickness ( thickness for short , often incorrectly also called wall thickness ) . The measurement is carried out perpendicular to the wall extension or perpendicular to the body axis. The wall thickness is often decisive for the function of a component (e.g. compressive strength ).

To calculate the wall thickness of a hollow cylinder , you need its inside and outside diameter . The boiler formula is used for the static calculation of the required wall thickness of a pipe or pressure vessel .
