Coat of arms of the Northwest Territories

The coat of arms of the Northwest Territories was bestowed on the Northwest Territories in Canada on February 7, 1957 by Queen Elizabeth II .

The coat of arms is divided diagonally from red and green by a wave cut, above the silver head of an arctic fox , below littered with gold bars; a blue wavy bar in the silver shield head, divided by a zigzag cut .

Red stands for the tundra in the north, green for the forested regions in the south; the dividing line symbolizes the tree line . The gold bars in the green field and the head of an arctic fox in the red field represent natural resources and furs, the basis of the region's wealth. The head of the shield represents the Northwest Passage through the polar pack ice .

The helmet jewel above the silver-red helmet bulge consists of a compass rose (symbol of the magnetic north pole ), flanked by two outward-facing golden narwhals .
