history

It is not known when the city of Rudolstadt first had a coat of arms. A first illustration can be found on a seal of a document from 1378. There is a stone coat of arms from 1784, which is located above a door at the old town hall in Rudolstadt.

The lion in the coat of arms of Rudolstadt comes from the coat of arms of the Counts of Schwarzburg , who used it as early as the 12th century. The lion stands for strength and power. In contrast to the Schwarzburg coat of arms, which shows the lion on a blue background, the people of Rudolstadt used the color green to demonstrate self-confidence and sovereignty .

The design of the coat of arms has been adapted several times over the centuries and was last revised in 1992.

The decision to use the coat of arms in its current form was made by the city council of Rudolstadt in July 1992.
