Warner-Lambert

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Warner-Lambert was an American pharmaceutical company. It was founded in Philadelphia as a pharmacy in 1856 by William R. Warner . In 1886 Warner gave up sole sales and subsequently concentrated on pharmaceutical production under the name William R. Warner & Co. In 1908, the company was bought by Gustavus A. Pfeiffer & Company, who moved the headquarters to New York, but kept the name . In 1916 the company took over the Hudnut cosmetics line, which in 1950 led to the name being changed to Warner-Hudnut. At the end of the 1920s, William R. Warner & Co. took over the German pharmaceutical company Gödecke . In 1952 Warner-Lambert took over New Jersey Chilcott Laboratories, which among other things produced drugs with nitropenta . In 1955, William R. Warner & Co. merged with the St. Louis Lambert Pharmacal Company , whose best-known product was Listerine , to form the Warner-Lambert Pharmaceutical Company. In the 1970s and 1980s the takeover of Emerson Drug, the cough drop manufacturer Smith Brothers, American Optical and Schick Shaving followed. In 1978, Warner-Lambert bought Entenmann's for $ 243 million, but sold it to General Foods for $ 315 million four years later. A planned merger with Parke, Davis & Co. was forbidden by the authorities, as the resulting company would have a monopoly . The company was criticized for the acquisition of IMED Corp. for $ 468 million in 1982. When it emerged that the company was only looking for short-term gains and some employees were leaving, IMED was resold to The Henley Group four years later for only about a third of the purchase price. Wilkinson Sword was acquired in 1993. 2000 Warner-Lambert was completely taken over by Pfizer . This transaction, valued at approximately $ 112 billion, is one of the largest corporate acquisitions of all time .
