Maintenance window

A maintenance window is a certain time window in which maintenance of hardware or software takes place. The length of the maintenance window depends on the amount and effort of the work to be carried out. The work takes place at night or outside normal working hours in order to avoid or completely exclude any impairment of service for customers (both internal and external). If several independent work steps are necessary for a change, these can take place over several days in order to avoid impairing the service.

However, this does not apply in principle. Maintenance work on systems whose availability has been determined as not critical for the user or whose function can be temporarily replaced by other devices (e.g. telephone system) can also be carried out during normal working hours in consultation with those involved.

Maintenance windows are day-to-day business in both information technology and telecommunications technology . In many cases, maintenance windows are contractually agreed with the customer concerned in the SLA or OLA and take place regularly. The agreement of fixed cyclical maintenance windows has the advantage that z. B. in the area of network or telecommunications technology, the employees of the Network Operation Center can count on this planned work and can therefore guarantee faster response times in the event of an error.
