Water rat
Water rat is a biologically imprecise term used to denote different rodent species that are not related to one another. These are:
- in Eurasia the water voles and of these mainly the eastern water vole
- in Africa the African water rat ( Colomys goslingi )
- in South America the Alfaro water rats ( Sigmodontomys ) and the Neotropical water rats ( Nectomys )
- in New Guinea the New Guinea water rats ( Leptomys ) and the New Guinea mountain water rats ( Paraleptomys )
- also the fish rats and the swimming rats , and often other water-bound taxa of small rodents
- the nutria is also called the water rat.
