Blowing up the water tower

The water tower in wood was built in 1908 and until it was blown up in 2011, due to the Garzweiler opencast mine, it was a landmark of the village of Holz , municipality of Jüchen . The height of the water tower was 48  m .

location

The water tower was on the former road from Hochneukirch to Otzenrath . It stood southwest of wood.

history

The water tower was used from 1908 for the drinking water supply of Hochneukirch. Later it was sold by the municipality of Hochneukirch to the Grevenbroich district water works . During the operating time, the water tower was guarded by a porter who owned a building next to the tower. However, this was torn down when the road to Otzenrath was relocated. From 1940 the tower had a shooting range, which was removed again after the Second World War .

As the opencast mine was approaching, the water in the area was pumped out as early as the 1960s and the pipes of the water tower were no longer deep enough. Since then the water tower has not been used. Until the resettlement of the village of Holz, it served as the town's landmark. The relocation of wood began in 2006. By 2011 the place had already been completely demolished and on January 22, 2011 at 4 p.m. the water tower was also blown up.

Demolition and memorial in Neu-Holz

The water tower was blown up on January 22, 2011. The lantern of the water tower on the dome was to be retained if possible, as it was to be erected as a landmark in the new location. However, it was badly damaged during the demolition and could not be used for a memorial in Neu-Holz .

However, there are considerations to recreate the water tower as a symbol on a 1: 2 scale.
