The water forest is a park with extensive forest and meadow areas in the Kleinmünchen district of Linz and serves as a local recreation and water protection area . It is about 1.5 km² in size and is bounded by the streets Am Langen Zaun, the Mühlkreis Autobahn , Hausleitnerweg, Müller-Guttenbrunn-Strasse, Spaunstrasse, Schwindstrasse, Zötlweg, Angerholzerweg, Prechtlerstrasse, Zeillergang, Wimmerstrasse, Eullerstrasse, the Urnenhain Kleinmünchen and the sports field Kleinmünchen / Pestalozzistraße . In the eastern part of the water forest there is a fenced area around the Scharlinz waterworks.

history

The former English garden

The water forest used to be largely farmland, as can be seen from two square cantilevers in Brunnenfeldstrasse. The place is called Scharlinz. The popular Englischer Garten excursion inn was located in the middle of the area, and the Bratwurstglöckerl inn still exists on the outskirts. Settlement houses were built in the interwar period , of which a few still exist today. After the Second World War, the area was dedicated as a water protection area and grassland. Little by little, the city of Linz acquired and demolished houses so that the proportion of green space has steadily increased. Furthermore, the water forest was designed as a local recreation area. For example, the few streets have been banned from driving, sports and play areas, tobogganing hills, running routes, a city hiking trail, toilet facilities, open-air dog areas and a senior park have been built. To protect the groundwater, around 1980 the Salzburger Strasse (B1), which ran through the water forest, was provided with concrete walls on both sides and the previously numerous crossings were now combined into two.

Waterworks

Scharlinz waterworks

The listed Scharlinz waterworks was built in 1891–1893 by Rumpel & Niklas from Teplitz. The mechanical equipment comes from Prager Maschinenbau AG. The main wing with the attached residential building is connected at right angles to the octagonal fountain house by a low hall. Today's appearance corresponds to the complex from 1893 after careful renovation.
