The Wat Traphang Ngoen ( Thai วัด ตระพัง เงิน - Silver Lake Monastery ) is a Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) in Sukhothai , Sukhothai Province in the northern region of Thailand .

Wat Traphang Ngoen is part of the Sukhothai Historical Park , it is located about 300 meters west of Wat Mahāthāt , the main temple of the Old City (Mueang Kao - เมือง เก่า ) of Sukhothai.

The temple was probably built in the 14th century, around the same time as Wat Mahāthāt.

Attractions

Wat Traphang Ngoen is aligned in such a way that it is illuminated by both the rising and setting sun. The main structures of Wat Traphang Ngoen are a central chedi , the ruins of a meeting hall ( Wihan ), a large Buddha statue on a pedestal in the west and an ordination hall ( ubosot or bot) on an island in the middle Artificially created lake, the "Traphang Ngoen" (Silver Lake), in the east of the temple.

The chedi with the tip typical of the Sukhothai period in the shape of a closed lotus flower stands on a square laterite base 10 meters in length, followed by five increasingly smaller steps made of bricks. Standing and striding Buddha statues are arranged in niches in the four cardinal directions above a simple stucco band. Under an old Chaeng tree ( Niebuhria siamensis - ต้น แจง ) lies ubosot east of the main chedi on a small island in the middle of the "Silver Lake". During the Sukhothai period, temple complexes were often laid out in such a way that the ordination hall was separated from the rest of the complex by a water surface in order to symbolize purity. The brick foundations of the building, some fragments of columns and a pedestal on which a Buddha statue probably once stood can be seen today. A low brick wall surrounds the ensemble. A long pedestrian bridge leads to the main street.
