The Watts Point Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve on the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . It was established as a provisional reserve in 1986. In 1990 the protected area received its current status.
location
The 30.9 km² reserve is located on the northern tip of the Great Northern Peninsula , 45 km west of St. Anthony . It has an approximately rectangular shape. It has 6.7 km of coastline on the Belle Isle Strait , which separates Newfoundland from Labrador . The Belle Isle Strait is covered in ice from December to June.
flora
The combination of geology and climate is the basis of a rare arctic-alpine flora that occurs in the area. The harsh climate is characterized by strong winds and frost. The flora is partly a relic of the plants that settled there after the retreat of the glaciers. The black crowberry and the opposed saxifrage are common in the reserve. Plants that only occur on the Great Northern Peninsula are the willow species Salix jejuna (English barrens willow) and the endangered cruciferous species Braya fernaldii (English Fernald's braya).
