Web part

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Web parts are part of the ASP.NET technology and are mainly used intensively in Microsoft SharePoint installations. They are used to display or manipulate content on a SharePoint website by the end user. The changes made can be made visible to all or only to certain users. In addition, settings can be saved and thus permanently assigned to the user who made them. This allows users to adapt a website to their own needs without the intervention of the administrator. This feature is known as personalization.

For example, web parts are used to display SharePoint libraries or lists. If a document library is created on a SharePoint page, it can be displayed multiple times on a SharePoint page using several web parts, for example once according to the date of the last change and once hierarchically based on the folder structure of the document library. The selection of the elements and attributes displayed can also be varied between the various web parts.

Like most SharePoint elements, web parts can be assigned separate display and editing rights. These are independent of the rights of the library or list displayed by the web part.

Possible uses

  • Web Part controls allow users to customize the content of a web page to suit their own needs. Provided you have the necessary rights, you can add, remove, hide or minimize web parts like normal windows.
  • Users can change the layout of a page with web parts. Web parts can be positioned anywhere on the page within web part zones. Their presentation, properties and behavior are configurable.
  • Web parts can be combined with one another. For example, they can access the data of other web parts and display or process them. This gives users the opportunity to generate functions by combining web parts.
