Webnews was a German-speaking social news community . Webnews was founded in November 2006 by Stefan Vosskötter and Thorsten Lüttger. The portal was operated by best webnews GmbH in Cologne .

positioning

Since February 2007 Holtzbrinck Ventures , a company of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group , has been involved in Webnews. Through the connection to Holtzbrinck, a web news button was integrated into all of the group's online media, including studiVZ .

A partnership with T-Online has also existed since September 2007, which includes the integration of web news into the T-Online portal. The webnews offer is also available via the subdomain webnews.t-online.de.

Since 2008, the local news from Webnews has been shown on meinestadt.de.

In October 2008 ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG took over a majority stake of 67 percent in Webnews from Holtzbrinck Ventures, with the option to take over the entire social news portal at a later date.

Basic functions

Registered members have the opportunity to rate and comment on news on the web news platform, create news themselves (eyewitness) or link to external news sources.

Citizen Journalism

Since the beginning of 2008, Webnews has increasingly positioned itself as a platform for citizen journalism . Members can not only write their own posts directly on the platform, but also assign them to a specific location as a local message.

Rating System

The content is rated on the basis of an internal rating system in which the content is rated through click ratings and comments.

On April 5, it was announced in the newsletter to members that the service would be discontinued on May 16, 2016.
