The Wedung , also Wedoeng or Wedong , is a knife from Java .
description
The Wedung has a single-edged, heavy blade. The blade has a slightly curved back and a bulbous edge. They are made from simple iron, but also from Parmor steel (a type of Damascus steel ). The blades often have a back edge that runs from the place to the handle and is about a third of the length of the blade. The blades are often decorated with metal inlays at the handle area, which are worked out as an eye (Indon. Kembang Kacang) or in the shape of a mythical snake (Naga). Floral or leaf-shaped ornaments are also used. The place is pointy. The hilt has a guard (indon. Peksi) made from the blade and is made of wood and other materials. It is pentagonal in Java , the versions from Bali are often round. The ferrule is made of brass . A flat brass plate serves as a knob. The sheaths are made of wood and have a long, sturdy horn hook on the back, which is used to attach the knife to the belt. The scabbards are wrapped with strips of reed for decoration and reinforcement. The Wedung is a ceremonial weapon carried by the men at court and in the palace (Indon. Kraton) who are below the rank of prince. The Wedung is used by ethnic groups from Java.
