Waves and waves
Waves and Waves is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op.141). The work was performed for the first time on October 9, 1853 in the Volksgarten in Vienna.
Remarks
Johann Strauss probably got the inspiration for the waltz Wellen und Wogen in the autumn of 1852 when he was touring Germany with his band. He made a detour to the North Sea, possibly in connection with his guest performance in Hamburg. He processed the impressions he gained in this waltz. From the beginning, the work was not intended as a dance, but as a concert waltz. The first performance took place about a year after the composer's North Sea experience and met with mixed criticism. Parts of the press were praiseworthy, while other voices were more reserved. The music critic Eduard Hanslick rejected the work, also because he did not believe in turning to the pure concert waltz. In the years to come, Hanslick was to continue to critically examine the music of Johann Strauss. The waltz itself was not able to stay on the repertoire and has only recently been rediscovered.
The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 9 minutes and 3 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
