  • The Space Rescue Convention (in the English original "Agreement on the Rescue of Astronauts, the Return of Astronauts and the Return of Objects Launched into Outer Space" ) is an international agreement on the rescue of space travelers from space . It complements Article 5 of the Space Treaty and was signed in 1968.

    In the convention, the signatory states and organizations undertake to provide astronauts in need with every possible help and to transport them back to their home country as soon as possible after a successful rescue.

    Article 1 stipulates that as soon as a signatory learns of the emergency situation of a spaceship, its state or organization and the Secretary General of the United Nations will be informed as soon as possible.

    Article 2 deals with the rescue of a spaceship that has landed in a foreign country.

    Article 3 deals with rescue in international waters .

    Article 4 specifies that a landed crew will be extradited to their home country.

    Article 5 obliges the undersigned parties to return landed spaceships (or other space hardware) to the manufacturing organization or organization.

    Article 6 defines the term “launching authority” as the state or organization responsible for launching.

    Article 7 explains the possible circle of signatories and the formalities of signature or ratification.

    Article 8 enables each party to propose an extension of the agreement.

    Article 9 describes the possibility of withdrawing from the agreement.

    Article 10 lays down the distribution of the agreement.
