The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has been celebrating World Tourism Day on September 27th every year since 1980. The date goes back to the ratification of the UNWTO statutes in 1970.

World Tourism Day shows the importance of tourism to the international community as well as its impact on social, cultural, political and economic values ​​worldwide.

The theme and host country of World Tourism Day change every year. In 2014 World Tourism Day was celebrated in Mexico under the title “Tourism and Community Development”.

The motto for 2015 was "1 Billion Tourists - 1 Billion Opportunities" ("1 Billion Tourists - 1 Billion Opportunities"). This should underline the influence of tourism.

The motto of World Tourism Day 2016 was “Tourism for All”. It suggests that everyone should be able to travel independently, including the disabled, the elderly, families with young children and people on low incomes.

In 2017 the motto was "" Sustainable tourism: a tool for development ".

In 2018 the motto was "" Digital Transformation "".
