The Nový hrad (German Wenceslas Castle ) was a Gothic royal castle on the outskirts of the Czech capital Prague in the late Middle Ages . Today only remains of the wall are preserved.
The castle stretched north of Kunratice , today a district of Prague, on a wooded headland on the Kundratice brook. It was built on the orders of the Bohemian King Wenceslaus IV between 1411 and 1412, for whom it was primarily used as a summer residence. The royal castle consisted of two palaces, a square tower and two inlet gates. The not fortified outer bailey was separated from the main building by a wall and moat.
After King Wenceslas died on August 16, 1419 in his Wenceslas Castle, it was besieged by Prague citizens, conquered on January 27, 1420, burned down and never rebuilt; the ruins of today only give an idea of the former castle. From 1735 to the end of the 18th century there was still a chapel of St. John Nepomuk in the ruins . Towards the end of the 19th century, the castle was then razed to the basement level for safety reasons .
